The Unbuttoned Art Series was first exhibited at the 2016 Miami Art Week. The overarching message of this art series is the right of self-definition as it pertains to one's narrative. Here, the symbolism is revealed through the materials and the composition, such as the “primer” which covers most of this collection's canvases. As buttons serve the purpose of opening and closing garments, in this collection they symbolize the choice of keeping aspects of one's life private or open – a defiant act in the age of social media, with constant Facebook live-feeds, the reality of daily privacy leaks, and the over exposure to real-time information. As white primer is used to cover wall blemishes prior to a new coating of paint, in this series it stands for second chances, hope, new beginnings, and as a statement which declares life's constant state of impermanence. When coupled with the raw-canvas spots, the primer further brings the idea of possibilities, and of dealing with life's unresolved pathways. The pieces of cut-canvas is a call to action for viewers to determine, modify, and decoupage their own histories, dreams, and goals – as authors and artists often do in their artistic practice. The goal is to encourage viewers to engage in the creative authoring of their own masterpieces, which is their own definition of Self.
