In Thy Tent I Dwell
Multimedia Site-Specific Installation
Jônatas' 2016 installation at The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum offers an introspective exploration of his family's 500-year diaspora, blending memory, migration, and hybrid identity. The tent-like structure is made from a pastiche of photographs, birth certificates, inquisitional archives, and immigration documents, all stitched together with threads that evoke both personal and collective histories. Interwoven with handwritten testimonials, sounds of chanting, and the faint scent of spices, the installation immerses viewers in a sensory experience of nostalgia and trauma. The canvas tears allow glimpses into the interior, symbolizing the hidden lives of members of the Sephardic community—forced to conceal their identities during the Spanish Inquisition—while also reflecting the ongoing process of cultural adaptation and self-definition.
