In 2015, the Anti-Defamation League named Jônatas Chimen Artist of the Year for his powerful work exploring themes of exile, hidden identity, and cultural resilience. This recognition led to the creation of his solo exhibition, Journey: A Visual Narrative by Jônatas Chimen. The collection presents an introspective and symbolic account of Chimen’s personal awakening—coming into the light of freedom after generations of his family preserved a Marrano identity. Through layered imagery and rich historical references, the series speaks to a universal experience: the struggle to protect, reclaim, and embrace one’s identity in the face of erasure. Today, Journey resonates more than ever, amid rising antisemitism and the ongoing persecution of Latin American immigrants—two histories that converge in the artist’s own lineage.
