The Innerverse

The Innerverse of Jônatas is a mixed-media series by Brazilian-American artist Jônatas Chimen that explores the psychological and generational effects of exile, migration, and cultural inheritance. Drawing inspiration from multiverse theory and personal family history, the series considers the emotional weight of diasporic identity through layered symbolism and process-based technique. Composed primarily of monotypes later torn, reassembled, and painted upon, each panel reflects fragmented narratives of movement, loss, and resilience. Chimen incorporates ancestral documents, testimonies, and visual echoes from past generations—particularly a great-grandfather who migrated from Spain to Brazil in 1909, mirroring the artist’s own migration decades later. The recurring figures in the series, both surreal and symbolic, evoke the suspended state of those who live between worlds. By transforming trauma into visual form, The Innerverse becomes a homage to all migrants, affirming continuity amid rupture and positioning memory as a generative force in the ongoing reconstruction of identity.
