SHORT FILM

As part of his multidisciplinary practice, Jônatas Chimen creates unscripted short films that function as conceptual extensions of his visual installations and painting series. Often produced with minimal technical intervention and without scripted dialogue, these films serve as open-ended commentaries on core themes that define his oeuvre: displacement, hybridity, spiritual resilience, and cultural memory. Rather than operating as narrative cinema, the works prioritize atmosphere, gesture, and symbolism—evoking the psychological and emotional states of migration and in-betweenness. Frequently projected within or alongside his exhibitions, the films offer temporal and performative dimensions to otherwise static works, deepening the immersive and reflective potential of each installation. These video works not only bridge mediums but also resist resolution, favoring a fluid, process-based approach aligned with Chimen’s broader exploration of fractured identities. As visual essays, they reinforce the artist’s commitment to a practice that crosses disciplines, inviting viewers into a dynamic space between image, performance, and personal archive.
